Juetta Lu Mayes
Juetta "Joy" Lu Mayes, 92, of New London, Missouri, passed away peacefully at 6:30 AM Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Beth Haven Nursing Home in Hannibal.
Graveside Services and Burial will be at 1:00 PM Friday, February 2, 2018 at the Woodland Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio.
The Family is being served by the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal, MO.
Juetta was born August 25, 1925, in St. Louis, MO to the late Jesse and Carrie Weidner Haines.
She was first married to Stanley Rickert and he preceded her in death in 1996. She later married James "Jim" Mayes and he also preceded her in death.
Juetta (known to some as "Joy") is survived by her sons, Barry Rickert of Fredericksburg, VA and Bob Rickert (Kathy) of Hannibal, MO, grandchildren, Elizabeth Rickert Dowdy of Fredericksburg, Brian Rickert of Memphis, TN, Chase Rickert of Pensacola, FL, Linde Rickert Tassell (Paul) of Charlottesville, VA, Dorian Crampton (Ron) Ashburn VA, Jane Strickland (Justin ), of Malvern, PA, Kelly Whitfield (Kenny) of Wentzville, MO, Aaron Groves (Marlene) of St. Peters, MO, 12 great grandchildren, cherished cousins and friends.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 19 years, James "Jim" Mayes and an infant son, Jesse Rickert.
Juetta grew up in Phillipsburg, Ohio and attended Otterbein University before she married Stanley Rickert, who was in the United States Navy in 1945. They moved to Dayton, Ohio, where they raise her sons and worked with Stanley running their family printing business. He sons remember her prevailing parenting philosophy as "let boys be boys." Later, Juetta settled in her childhood home at Phillipsburg and worked for the MS Society. Those who knew Juetta remember her as a kind, refined lady who was fun-loving, even-tempered, diligent, and a good friend. She had a smile for everyone, and her laugh was captivating and contagious.
Juetta was an accomplished piano and organ player, often playing for her church and for weddings. She also had a beautiful singing voice. She followed St. Louis Cardinal Baseball, a special connection to her childhood which she spent going to spring training and games in support of her father, a long time Hall of Fame pitcher for St. Louis (1918-1937).) She was a member of the Phillipsburg United Methodist Church and later in life was actively involved with the Shriner's organization along side her husband Jim, whom she married in 1977. She enjoyed crocheting, traveling, cooking for her family, looking her best, Bob Barker's, The Price Is Right, and a good laugh. She adored her grandchildren.
